ACSEP has created five engaging elearning modules that have been specifically designed for Registrars on the ACSEP Training Program, and for those wanting to delve deeper into these core Sport and Exercise Medicine topics.
These five "Academic Modules" are designed to give the user an advanced understanding of the concepts and principles relating to each subject area. The academic understanding gained in the study of these areas allows clinical reasoning and decisions to be based on sound scientific and evidence based premises. Each module takes 20-60hrs to complete and contains an examination at the end of the course.
While these modules have been created specifically for the ACSEP Training Program, anyone may purchase these modules and complete them in their own time. The Module topics complement a wide range of medical and allied health specialities and are beneficial as self directed professional development and may count towards CPD points.
ACSEP Registrars are required to complete a minimum of one module per training year, with the Research Methods module being completed in 1st year, and all must be completed prior to sitting the Fellowship Examination.
The cost of each module is $1900 and they are housed, and completed, within ACSEP's Learning Management System (LMS). The Research Methodology module provides a comprehensive review of aspects of research and evidence based medicine for Sport and Exercise Physicians and Sport and Exercise Physician Registrars, to assist with developing research project concepts, performing research and interpreting the results of research. The module covers the topic areas of Epidemiology including study types and bias, Biostatistics, Meta-analysis and Systematic Reviews and Aspects of Evidence Based Medicine and Critical Appraisal.
The course is divided into two parts. This module aims to equip Sport and Exercise Physicians’ with knowledge and understanding of key elements of sports nutrition theory and practice. The module provides a broad coverage of key areas of sports nutrition, with a focus on working collaboratively with Accredited Sports Dieticians. Note this course does not qualify physicians to be sports dieticians or offer nutrition counselling, but rather aims to foster an understanding of the role of nutrition with a sport science multi-disciplinary team.

The Sport Psychology Module provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of a sports psychologist, and the information required to effectively manage the key psychological issues in sport. The module explores the management of mental health and common psychological issues for athletes, and outlines the scope of mental skills training for performance. Information and resources are provided to assist Sport and Exercise Physicians enhance their expertise in the field of Sport and Exercise Psychology.

The Sports Biomechanics module utilises a cross-section of journal articles on sport and clinical biomechanics to illustrate key mechanical principles that can be applied to the Sport and Exercise Physicians’ practice. In addition to the readings and associated commentary, pre-recorded audio-visual presentations supplement these learnings with tutorials on bike setup, running technique and the fundamental biomechanical method of inverse dynamics. Combined, the resources and learning road map provided aim to enhance the physicians understanding of biomechanics applied to many of the most commonly played sports in Australia.
This academic module covers a wide range of important components, commencing with the general principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and leading in to the relevant pharmacological considerations of commonly used medications in athletes and recreational exercisers. It specifically explores the effect the medication may have on sporting performance, and the effect exercise may have on the efficacy and side effects of the medication. Part three of the module covers doping, the substances involved, pharmacology of the commonly used substances, side effects and testing procedures. The module is well supported by peer reviewed literature and there are formative assessment opportunities throughout.
